Dr. Bonagura’s is a graduate of the Ohio State University. He completed a rotating internship at the Animal Medical Center and residencies and specialty board certifications in Cardiology and Internal Medicine at Ohio State. John was Head of Cardiology & Interventional Medicine at OSU for most of his career, and is currently Professor Emeritus. He has been visiting research fellow at Edinburgh University (Scotland) and Gilbreath-McLorn Endowed Professor of Cardiology at the University of Missouri. He is currently affiliated with NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine. John served as President of the ACVIM specialty of Cardiology. He is the long-time Editor of Kirk’s Current Veterinary Therapy and co-author of a Colour Atlas of Veterinary Cardiology and Cardiovascular Diseases in Companion Animals and editorial board member of Journal of Veterinary Cardiology and American Society of Echocardiography CASE. John has co-authored over 300 scientific publications and book chapters. He is recipient of the Ohio State campus Award for Distinguished Teaching, the Bourgelat award of the BSAVA, Kirk Lifetime Achievement Award from ACVIM, Doctor Honoris Causa from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Faculty Achievement Award of the AAVC, and distinguished Alumnus awards from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine and the Animal Medical Center.
